Nonwovens: Powering a Trillion-Dollar Industry (I)

From “Follower” to Global Leader

Nonwovens, a century-old young textile sector, have become indispensable across medical, automotive, environmental, construction, and agricultural fields. China now leads as both the world’s largest producer and consumer of nonwovens.

In 2024, global demand rebounded strongly, with China exporting 1.516 million tons worth $4.04 billion—ranking first globally. Its annual output reached 8.561 million tons, nearly doubling in a decade with a 7% annual growth rate. Major production hubs lie in coastal Zhejiang, Shandong, Jiangsu, Fujian, and Guangdong.

Post-pandemic adjustment, 2024 saw restorative growth: stable demand in hygiene and medical sectors, rapid expansion in wiping products and packaging. A complete industrial chain—from polyester/polypropylene raw materials to spunbond, meltblown, and spunlace processes, then to downstream applications—ensures cost efficiency and supply chain stability. Technological breakthroughs, including large-scale electrospinning, flash-spun nonwovens, and biodegradable meltblown wood pulp, have shifted China from “following” to “leading” in key areas.

Green Transformation: A Sustainable Future

In the context of the global pursuit of sustainable development, China’s nonwovens industry takes the lead. The industry promotes energy – saving and emission – reduction technologies, applies green energy, formulates environmentally friendly product standards, popularizes carbon footprint calculations, advances “biodegradable” and “flushable” certifications, and nurtures “green factory” demonstration enterprises.

The China Industrial Textiles Industry Association (CITIA) strongly supports the industry’s green transformation. Through promoting non – woven green initiatives and standard – setting, CITIA helps the nonwovens industry move steadily on the path of sustainable development.

CITIA supports this transition through green initiatives and standard-setting. With robust industry chain, technological innovation, and green commitments, China’s nonwovens industry is solidifying its position as a trillion-dollar global powerhouse.
