A Key Market on the Rise
Roofing and building construction represent one of the largest durable markets for Nonwoven materials. These materials are used in house wraps, roofing underlayments, window flashings, flooring, insulation, and more. According to a new report from Smithers – The Future of Global Nonwovens to 2030 – the global durable nonwovens market for building and roofing reached 1.1 million tonnes (30.7 billion sqm) in 2025, valued at US$4.2 billion. From 2025 to 2030, growth is expected at 7.7% by tonnage, 14.4% by area, and 8.8% by value.
Recovering from Past Slumps
Despite these strong numbers, the building/roofing market saw a significant decline in 2020-2021. Pre-pandemic forecasts suggested consumption should have been about 100,000 tonnes higher in 2020. By 2030, the market is expected to return to near pre‑2020 growth rates.
Growth Driven by Emerging Regions
Industry expert Phillip Mango, author of the Smithers report, notes: “Growth in building/roofing nonwovens is directly tied to housing starts, which are expected to grow slowly due to inflation, global economic health, slow or stagnant population growth, and slower rural‑to‑urban migration.” Still, emerging markets in the Middle East/Africa, Eastern Europe, and South America will lead growth through 2030, even though absolute consumption will remain about 135,000 tonnes below pre‑pandemic expectations.
